Maze games

Two Pac-Man mazes, played from both sides. In Chomp & Spell you eat letters and spell words with them; in Haunt you are the ghosts.

Haunt is playable now and still becoming a teaching tool. The gameplay came first, on purpose; the teaching is being added one game at a time. Each card says what the game has so far and what we are considering.

Chomp & Spell

Eat the letters, then spell the words. A retro maze game for an NES-style controller.

What students practice

  • Building words from a limited rack of letters.
  • Deciding whether to spend a tile now or save it for a longer word: each tile can be used once in the whole round.
  • Reasoning about which letters are likely, in a Wheel of Fortune style rescue puzzle.
  • Finding every word hidden in the same letters (TEA, EAT, ATE, SEAT) in the bonus round, then seeing the longest words they missed.

The thinking it makes visible

Planning with scarce resources. Scrabble scoring rewards rare letters, so a student has to weigh a sure word now against a better one later, and the rack carries over from level to level.

Ideas we are considering
  • A teacher's own word list, so the spelling round uses a unit's vocabulary.
  • Showing the best possible word after each round, as a learning moment.
How to play

Clear every dot in the maze while four ghosts chase you. The power pellets are letters: eating one puts that letter in your rack at the bottom of the screen and turns the ghosts blue. Blue ghosts carry letters too; eat one for points and its letter. Each letter you eat makes a new bonus letter pop up somewhere else a moment later. Bonus letters don't scare the ghosts and vanish if you leave them too long.

Caught by a ghost? Once per level you get a rescue (RESCUE shows in the corner while you still have it). Spin the wheel for a category, then solve a word from it Wheel of Fortune style: pick a tile from your rack, and if that letter is in the word it fills in everywhere. Solve it and you keep your life; three misses and you lose it. Every tile you guess is used up, right or wrong. Move over your tiles with the D-pad and press A to guess, or just type the letter. If no word can be solved with your tiles, there's no rescue.

Bonus round. After every third level there's an intermission, then 90 seconds to find as many words as you can in your rack (3+ letters, 100 points each). Nothing is used up, so TEA, EAT, ATE and SEAT all count. The clock and the music speed up as time runs out. Afterwards you see the longest words you missed, and then that level's spelling round.

When the dots are gone, the spelling round begins:

  • Build words from your rack. Each tile can be used once in the whole round, so choose: QUIZ now, or save the U for something longer?
  • Words must be 2–8 letters and in the game's word list.
  • A word scores its Scrabble letter values, plus a bonus for 5+ letters, times 10.
  • Tiles you don't spend carry over to the next level (the rack holds 16).

You start with 3 lives and earn one more at 10,000 points.

AZ or K—Add the highlighted tile to the word
BX or J—Remove the last letter (Backspace)
StartEnter (or P)PauseSubmit the word
SelectShift—Finish the round (press twice)

In the spelling round, keyboard players can also just type letters, then Enter to submit and Backspace to undo. M toggles sound (anywhere but the spelling round, where M is a letter); MUTE shows in the corner while it's off.

A USB gamepad works through the browser's Gamepad API; press any button on it once the page is open so the browser notices it.

The first time you plug in a pad the browser doesn't recognise (most cheap USB pads), the game asks you to press A, B, Select and Start, and remembers the answer for every game on the site. Add ?padsetup to the address to ask again.

Haunt

You are the ghosts. A retro maze game for an NES-style controller. The computer plays Pac-Man; you steer one ghost at a time and switch between the others. Catch him before he clears the maze.

In it now

Nothing yet. It is a game for now.

Ideas we are considering
  • Distance on a grid: counting steps around the walls versus a straight line.
  • Planning together to corner someone instead of chasing them.
How to play

Rules

  • Any ghost that touches Pac-Man catches him. The ghost you steer is a little faster than he is and can run him down from behind (GOTCHA!). The others run on autopilot and are slower than him, so they can't chase him down, but they can close a trap: block a corridor, sit on the last dots, come in from the other end. A catch by an autopilot ghost is a TRAPPED! and scores 1.5x.
  • A catch scores (200 + 5 x dots left) x level x the mode's multiplier. Pac-Man eating a frightened ghost costs you 100.
  • If Pac-Man clears the maze you lose a life and the level restarts.
  • Power pellets turn your ghosts blue and slow for a few seconds.
  • Pac-Man gets faster and smarter level by level: by level 5 he reads the maze for pincers and dead ends and avoids corridors where ghosts are closing from both ends.

Modes

Pick on the title screen with the D-pad, then Start or A. The choice and a separate high score for each mode are remembered.

ModeGhostsCatch multiplier
EASY4x1
NORMAL3x1.5
HARD2x2
SOLO1 (just you)x3

In SOLO there is nobody to switch to, so A, B and Select do nothing. Your ghost is still faster than Pac-Man at every level, so it can be won.

Sound

Chiptune music plays the whole time you are playing, synthesized in the browser (no audio files). Its tempo follows the ghosts' speed and climbs as the dots run out; when Pac-Man eats a power pellet it switches to a jittery "you're the prey now" loop. M mutes and unmutes (remembered). Sound stops while paused and when the tab is hidden.

On the title screen the D-pad picks the mode. After Game Over, Start goes back to the title screen.

Ghost order is red, pink, cyan, orange. A gamepad works through the browser's standard mapping; pads that report the D-pad as a stick work too.
